Suffered an Ankle Sprain?

A sprained ankle occurs when the ankle ligaments are stretched beyond their limits or even torn. Ankle sprains can vary in their severity from a mild rolled or twisted ankle, to a severe sprain with complete ligament ruptures, fractures and tendon damage.

The most common causes of ankle sprains are rolling the ankle on uneven ground, or landing on an uneven surface. Others can occur with a misstep in high heels, a sporting mishap, or fall.

At the time of injury you will often have a sudden onset of pain, swelling, and heat. In most cases you should be able to walk, but in more severe sprains where the injured person cannot weight bear on the foot at all, an x-ray may be needed to rule out a fracture.

The first treatment for an Ankle sprain injury will involve a detailed history of how the injury occurred, the sports and activities played, training regime, and specific requirements of the sport. The physiotherapist will do a physical exam to determine what ligaments have been injured, to what extent, and if any other muscles or soft tissues have also been injured. The physios at City Physio have treated 1000’s of sprained ankles on sporting fields and in the clinic and are often able to grade an ankle injury within a few percent of what an MRI can do! From this, the Physiotherapist will determine an appropriate action plan to not just reduce pain, but to prevent recurrence, eliminate or control any contributing factors, and return the athlete back to sport in the fastest, most efficient way!

Our physiotherapists will do a full subjective and objective assessment of your ankle considering a wide range of factors including referred pain from the low back, the mechanics of the whole lower limb and foot, strength and balance of the muscles surrounding the ankle, sporting technique, motor control, footwear, and biomechanics.

Rehabilitation will have a strong focus on restoring range of motion and ensuring the ankle is stable and strong to prevent re-injury!

With professional assessment and prompt treatment from City Physio, many ankle injuries can be successfully treated completely within a few treatments.
